"Gunners Powder" is the Red Beard Rum for connoisseurs. This molasses rum comes directly from the barrel and is bottled as Over Proof Rum without the addition of sugar. Pure rum, unadulterated and beautifully strong. Over Proof has its origins in seafaring. In the days of the Red Beard pirates, it was customary for sailors to be rewarded with rum. To check whether the rum was not "too heavily" adulterated or watered down, the "gunner" soaked his black powder in rum and lit the mixture. If it did not burn, the rum was too weak and therefore not accepted as payment. If it did burn, it was tested and accepted and "Over Proof" at over 50% Alc. vol.

Colour: Dark Mahagony

Nose: Intense and slightly sweet with typical molasses rum notes paired with flavours of orange jam, honey, walnuts, sultanas and caramel

Palate: Very intense, spicy, relatively smooth and pleasant with flavours of tropical fruits like pineapple and oranges

Finish: Long lasting, rather dry with a clear wood spice with a subtle bitterness and flavours of prunes and nuts.

The Red Beard Rum is the reincarnation of the rum of the Red Beard Crew. Legend has it that the notorious rum smugglers shipped litres of rum from the Caribbean all the way to Switzerland. Today, however, only the sugar cane molasses is imported, and the rum is distilled in Switzerland.
